Bird Flu and Its Spread over the world

Bird flu is an infection caused by avian (bird) influenza (flu) virus. It is interesting to know that these flu viruses occur naturally among birds. Bird Flu is contagious among birds. Even though Wild birds worldwide carry the viruses in their intestines, but do not usually get sick from them. It is our domesticated birds, ducks, chickens, turkey which gets very sick and also kills them.

Two main forms of disease that are causes by the infection of the avian influenza viruses are distinguished by the low and high extremes of virulence.

The low pathogenic form may go undetected and has only mild symptoms such as a drop in egg production and ruffled feathers. But the high pathogenic form has a tendency to spread more rapidly through the poultry. And it is this form that affects multiple organs and has a 90-100% mortality rate, and usually within 48 hours or coming in contact with it.

Flu pandemic is occurring among most of the countries that are large producers of poultry. Even though Bird Flu does not usually infect humans, a number of cases of human infection have created quiet a stir in the medical world.

Most of the cases in which avian influenza infection in humans have been sited is where the humans have a close contact with the infected poultry. Examples could be domesticated chicken, ducks.

As the mode of transfer of the disease is though contamination, which happens when the infected birds secretions and excretions come in contact with either other birds of humans. Hence during a outbreak of avian influenza among poultry, there is a possible risk to people who have direct contact with the infected birds to get infected.

With the increasing fear of a influenza pandemic, one of the medicines that is in the forefront for the medication of flue, Tamiflu (oseltamivir) has been in great demand. Today there is a shortage of Tamiflu and the production cannot keep up with the demand as government are stocking up.

Tamiflu is an antiviral drug used in the treatment and prophylaxis of both Influenza virus A and Influenza virus B. It is a neuraminidase inhibitor, acting as a transition-state analogue inhibitor of influenza, thereby preventing new viruses from emerging from the infected cells.
