From Candlewick To The Superluxe Chenille Dressing Gown

Chenille is manufactured from a very special type of cloth known as candlewick, which is then through a manufacturing process transformed into the soft and fluffy material that is now used for everything from robes, bedspreads, throws, pillows, jackets and purses.

The word “Chenille” refers more to the process of which it is made rather than the raw material, it is a tufted cloth with a textured pile and has a base cloth, which means the underside of the cloth is flat soft cotton, whereas the topside has a very soft cotton pile, known for its luxuriously soft feeling, fluffy pile and vintage look which makes it highly desirable.

A genuine chenille dressing gown is made from 100% cotton which means it will not leave moisture on the wearer’s skin, if worn from the shower.  Most chenille dressing gown manufacturers combine a high content of cotton with a low content of polyester for specific countries, which has a similar feel and again is breathable. The polyester based qualities that are now available on the market are not actually chenille, but are poor imitations of the real article.

In the 1930’s, usage for the tufted fabric particularly became widely desirable for throws, bedspreads and carpets, though this wasn’t popularised for apparel until commercial production in the 1970’s, despite dressing gowns having been made in chenille since the 1930’s.

At this time the popularisation of chenille led to the largest European chenille manufacturers, Andrew Russell, Everwear leisurewear and Kinnaird Ireland developing the ‘Superluxe’ chenille quality which has more of a heavier plush pile.  The dressing gowns would go through a specialist dyeing process after the stitching by means of specialist machinery which was developed especially for that and is still in use to this day.

If you don’t already own a chenille bathrobe why not treat yourself to lounging in pure luxury.  The look is timeless and will last for years.
